2011 "Comandante" Chardonnay
Comandante Society Members
It is with great pleasure that we present a very special bottling to society members: the 2011 Comandante Chardonnay, consisting entirely of the ‘Old Wente’ block from Hyde Vineyard. This block was planted in 1979 (32 years old) and is the only remaining block since the inception of Hyde Vineyard.
What we have learned over the last decade of making wine from Hyde Vineyard is that
vine age is something to be cherished, respected, and now celebrated. The ‘Old Wente’ vines produce small clusters with tiny berries that possess a natural opulence and concentration. The intensity of the Old Wente’s juice marries with Hyde Vineyard’s flinty minerality and natural acidity to create what we believe to be an evocative wine that balances opulence and elegance.
Hyde Vineyard experienced a long, cold season that began with wet weather well into mid June. Ultimately, the rainy weather delayed flowering and set. What followed was a cool summer providing slow and steady Chardonnay maturation. A late September harvest capped off the ideal vintage providing balance and heightened minerality.
